Confidentiality in Adoption Tracing

Sometimes, either the biological parent(s) or the adoptive/social parents who hired us wish to keep their contact information and/or full identity and certain other information confidential, for whatever reason.

In such cases, we can function as the intermediary for communications.

In some cases, these needs may change over time as familiarity is established and various fears and unknowns are resolved. The reasons can vary, e.g., the biological parent(s) eventually reveal the existence of their offspring to others, the adopted child grows up, the adoptive parents become more assured of their legal position, various psychological factors develop, etc.

However, in some other cases, this never changes.

The majority of cases start this way until we feel out the waters and the situation. For example, the adoptive parents may wait to see what is the situation, character, and outlook of the biological parents, whereby if it looks acceptable then we may provide more information or complete the direct link.

It is our standard operating procedures that we do not give the Thai biological family many details nor any contact information of the overseas adoptive family unless and until you are comfortable with us doing so, and even at that time we follow your wishes on exactly what you are willing to provide, e.g., email address, postal address, and/or phone numbers. We normally use only your first names. The use of first names works smoothly in Thailand because Thai people actually use nicknames predominantly in social circles, not even their given first name nor their surname. We are normally not even asked for surnames.

Normally, the Thai biological family does not ask for a lot of details about the adoptive family, besides which country their biological child lives in, and some of the basics about the adoptive family, in the course of asking about the life activities and home of their biological child. Besides, the Thai biological family usually wouldn't understand many details about foreigners anyway, since Thai biological families tend to be from a low socioeconomic and educational class of society. However, as we are asking the Thai biological parents many personal questions, some of which could be sensitive, it is important that we be reciprocating and fostering an attitude of cooperation.

If you wish for us to be even more restrictive, then you can give us your guidelines.

The Thai biological family usually defers to using us as a go-between at first, due to the language barrier. We have Thai lady agents speak with them in Thai, and handle the Thai language side of things. We normally translate letters and phone calls.

Regarding general confidentiality issues, please keep in mind that we are a private investigation agency. Not public, not a government, but private. We have been operating for many years. Our Director previously worked for the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., and is experienced in compartmentalization and the "need to know" criteria for information sharing. All of our Thai agents have been trained, and we are well aware of the sensitivity and personal nature of the information both given to us and found out as our cases develop. Our operations are about as confidential and professional as you could find.
